' Forever ' Chapter 1   Story by : Devilish Angel

Florence stared out at the pearly white snow that covered all of New York City. It surely was going to be a white Christmas this year, Florence thought. “Florence!” her mother called from down stairs. Florence sighed
with annoyance as she ran to the stairs. “Yes, mother.” Florence replied. Her mother stood at the bottom of the
stairs, looking up at her.

“The hospital called. They’d like you to go in today.” She said. Florence smiled. She loved working as a candy striper at the hospital. Her mother stared at the smile on her face. “I swear Florence, if you could, you would spend all your life there.” Florence quickly ran into her room and closed the door. Her mother was right, if she could, she would. The only thing that was holding her back was that her mother also needed her to be a candy striper at home. Her mother was healthy and could go along fine without her, it was just her father who needed her help.

She regularly fed her father soup, three times a day. Her mother was always working since she was supporting the family on her 40,000 a year paycheck. Florence never complained though. She loved her father and it never really bothered her that she had to take care of him every day. You know, he wasn’t always sick. They were lucky he was still with them. He was diagnosed with Malaria right after he got back from his trip. Florence could remember the very day he had went to Peninsular Malaysia. She was stuck home alone,
feeling so lonely. Ever since she was a little girl she always had a bond with her father. She always assumed it was that saying ‘Daddy’s Little Girl.’ As for her brother, Oliver, who was 24 and was now attending Berkley,
he always had a bond with her mother. Her mother had been in a previous marriage, but declared she had any kids in that marriage.

Florence never asked her about it since every time she thought about it, it brought her to tears. Well, when her father came back home, he got really sick. The doctors said that when he was in the tropical areas of Malaysia, which was most of Malaysia, some kind of mosquito bit him and transferred some disease called
Malaria to him. Every since then, he’d been in bed all day and his little girl would always be his company. Her mother was always distant and barely ever came home. As for Oliver, he never came home. Not even for Christmas. Sometimes Florence wished her father had never went to Malaysia, but other times she’d just thank god that her father was still there and praise him for bringing them closer together.

Florence stood up and stared at herself in the mirror. She looked like a normal girl, although she wasn’t even close to normal. Her long brown strands were placed back with a small white hair tie. She always tied her
hair back, it was the way she liked it. Florence was one of those girls who you never expect to put on make-up or change her looks. Sure, she had some friends and she was very social, but she never felt like she fitted in.
Florence shook her head as she glanced at herself in the red and white striped dress. Forcing a smile she slipped on her long black jacket and walked to her father’s room. Of course, it was her father’s room, not her
parents’, but only father’s. Ever since he was diagnosed, she was the only one who’d talk to him without the fear of loosing him the next day. Her mother always slept in the guest room and her excuse every morning would be, ‘I got so tired after a long day of work and I couldn’t make it upstairs.’ Florence slowly opened the door. The window curtains were wide open as light shone from outside. Florence smiled as she entered. Her father was awake; in fact, he was sitting up and staring outside. “Good morning papa.” Florence greeted as she ran to the chair that was placed near his bedside. He smiled as he leaned forward to kiss her
forehead.

“Good morning darling.” He muttered. “Off to the hospital?” Florence nodded.
“After I fix you your soup.” Florence said. “How are you feeling today papa?”
“I don’t know darling, the same.” He replied. “What about you?”
“Papa, you seem to be better. Me? I’m good.” Florence said as she headed for the door.
“Let me go bring you your soup. I’ll be back.” Florence opened the door and slid out. She walked to the heater and flicked it to a warmer temperature. She ran down the stairs and into the kitchen. She opened the cupboard filled with small plates and grabbed one, placing it under the small soup machine, the one they had bought especially for her father. Actually, her grandmother sent it over from France as a Christmas present for him. She pressed the button as soup came out. She searched the cabinets for a spoon. When she found one, she whipped it with a napkin and placed it in her father’s soup. Smiling, she carried the soup up the stairs and into his room. “Papa, here’s your soup.” Florence said handing it to him. He smiled and gladly accepted it.

“Thank you princess.” He said as he picked up the spoon and took it in his mouth. He smiled, satisfied. Florence walked over to the window and stared out at the little children playing in the snow. “What are you thinking?” her father asked.
“Nothing.” Florence replied as she walked back to the chair beside her father and sat down.
“You can go, darling.” He assured her. Florence nodded.
“I know I can, but I don’t want to. Not yet.” Florence said with a warm
smiled as she placed her hand on her father’s. “I love you Papa.” He smiled, setting his soup down on the nightstand.
“I love you too.” He said. “I wish you wouldn’t worry about me so much.” She sighed as she walked over to the table that was at the end of the bed. She grabbed the kettle and poured the hot water into a stone cup.
“Papa, I’m not worried. I’m just…” Florence said, searching for a word as she dropped the herbal tea bag into the cup. “I’m just making sure you’re ok.” She paused and thought about what she just said. “Yeah, making sure
you’re ok.” Her father smiled as she handed him his tea. He placed his pale lips on the cup and sipped on his tea.
“You should really get going to the hospital. There are a lot of people that
need your help more than I do.” He said as he took her hand in his. She smiled and leaned over to kiss his cheek.
“Ok papa. I’ll see you at dinner then.”
“Have a good day.”
“Bye papa.”
“Bye princess.”
