' Forever ' Chapter 2   Story by : Devilish Angel

“Hi Gladys.” Florence greeted the nurse at the front desk. “Well hello there, Miss Favire.” Gladys said. “Ok, here are your daily patients.” She handed Florence a list with a clipboard.

“Thank you.” Florence said as she took the list and walked into a small room labeled ‘Volunteers ONLY.’ She entered the room and took off her black jacket, hanging it on the coat stand. She opened the door and slipped out. Closing the door behind her she studied the list. Smiling she walked to a small room at the end of the narrow hall. She peeked into the room.
A pale young girl about her age lied there, eating her breakfast. Florence opened the door with a big smile. “Good morning Amber.” Florence greeted as she glanced at her watch and then proceeded to write ‘8:22am’ beside Amber’s name. Amber looked up and smiled.

“Morning Miss Favire.” Amber replied. “How are you this morning?” Florence nodded.
“I’m doing good.” Florence said with a smile. “And how about you? Doing better?” “I feel better. My father came in today.” Amber informed her with the biggest smile. “He said he found my mother and she’s my match for the bone marrow.”

Amber was one of Florence’s daily patients. She was diagnosed with leukemia about 2 months ago and somehow they had kept her well. True, she was pale and she was skinny to the bone, but her true spirit was what really mattered. Somehow she and Florence had become best friends or something very
close to it. Florence smiled and hugged her with excitement. “So there is a chance I might live and get the chance to meet Mr. Right.” Amber said.

Florence walked over to the small chair and sat down. “Don’t talk like that!” Florence said. “So, when are you going to do the surgery thing?” Amber laughed. “As soon as possible. My father said maybe tomorrow. So if you come in tomorrow, there’s going to be no me on your list.” Amber said. Florence smiled.

“My prayers are with you.” Florence assured her. “How do you feel about getting out of this hospital and going home for Christmas?” Amber smiled.“It’s a dream come true, Florence. You don’t understand.” Amber said.
Florence looked up at her. “Yeah, I’m the one with the rich father who owns businesses around the
world. I’m the one who can travel anywhere whenever I’m bored and I’m the one with a brand new Ferrari waiting for me.” Florence replied sarcastically with a laugh. Amber shook her head.

“No, no. It’s not that. It’s that maybe I’ll get a chance to get to know my mother. She’s the only person I’ve ever wanted to meet since I was little. I mean, when you were little, didn’t you want to meet someone so bad? Like
your idol.” Amber explained. Florence nodded. “Well my mother was always that person. Now granted, she’s not my idol, but she’s my mother. I mean can you imagine me having an idol like her? Leaving my husband with my child who was barely 2 months.” Amber giggled. “I want to meet her and maybe, just maybe hold back all my grudges.” Florence smiled as she stood up.
“I understand. Now as much as I want to stay here and chitchat with you all day, I still have 25 patients on the list I have to make sure everyone is ok and eating breakfast.” “Ok, Miss Favire. I’ll see you in 2 days!” Amber
said, crossing her fingers. Florence smiled as she gave Amber a hug. “Nice knowing you Flo. I’m gonna be up and outta here!” Florence laughed. “Better keep in touch Amz.” Florence replied as she walked to the door and
slipped out. Gladys was outside of the door. “Hey!” Florence exclaimed, startled.

“Is she doing good?” Gladys asked. Florence nodded. “Her mother’s right over there. She’s waiting to go into surgery.” Gladys pointed to a tall blond women, dressed in a long white fur coat. She looked beautiful. She looked like Amber. The women looked up and smiled as she walked over to Florence. “Hello, I’m Ms. Scott.” She greeted as she reached out her hand. Florence smiled and gladly shook her hand.

“Welcome to New York Hospital Ms. Scott. I’m Florence, your daughter’s candy striper.” Florence replied. Ms. Scott smiled as she peeked through the small window. Florence studied Ms. Scott’s blue eyes. Surely they were the same blue eyes Amber had. She was sure of it. Amber’s father had hazel eyes so Florence always wondered where Amber got blue eyes. Florence was sure if Amber was healthy and if she gained about 30 pounds, she’d be a complete replica of her mother. Her mother was tall and thin. Her blonde hair was in
a perfect twist, although some strands were falling down. Ms. Scott turned back to Florence.

“I was told you were not only her candy striper, but her companion.” Ms. Scott said. Florence nodded as she glanced at Gladys. Gladys smiled. “Well, Amber and I have created this bond.” Florence said. Ms. Scott smiled. “Can I ask one favor?” Ms. Scott asked. Florence nodded. “Will you please tell me about my daughter?”

“Gladly.” Florence answered. She stared at the list in her hands and then at Amber. Smiling, she looked up at Ms. Scott. “Although, maybe Amber might want to tell you about her, herself.” Ms. Scott looked at her in confusion. “She wants to meet you.” Tears were streaming out of Ms. Scott’s eyes. Slowly she opened the door and walked in. Florence closed the door and watched as Ms. Scott took a seat at Amber’s bedside and hugged Amber. Florence smiled and glanced at Gladys. “My work here is done. I’m off to…” Florence placed her finger on the next name. “A new patient?” Florence asked confused. Gladys looked at the name.

“Yes. He just flew in from Thailand. Something about injuring himself when he was wakeboarding.” Gladys said with a laugh.
“Does he speak English?” Florence asked, worried.
“I don’t know. I doubt it.” Gladys replied as she walked off. Florence stared at her in disbelief. As she walked to the second floor she became overwhelmed with anxiety.,br> “Just because I’m what? Half Thai, they expect
me to speak Thai to this…Joni Anwar.” Florence mumbled. She took a deep breath and entered the room. A handsome man lied awake eating his breakfast. He looked up at her as she entered the room. Ok, remember? When you went to Thailand and your mother taught you how to say hi? Well this is where it
comes in useful, Florence thought to herself. Slowly, she opened her mouth and blurted out, “Swatdee ka.” He smiled.

“Swatdee krap.” He replied, still smiling. Florence exhaled and walked over to the chair near his bedside. He was still smiling at her. “Um…Florence.” She said pointing to herself. He smiled and pointed to
himself. “Florence.” He said. She shook her head.
“No, no. My…name…is…Florence.” She said slowly as she pointed to herself.
Still pointing to herself she said, “Florence.” He seemed amused since he started laughing. When he saw she wasn’t laughing, he stopped. She smiled and pointed to him. “Joni.” He smiled and pointed to himself.
“Joni.” He said and then pointed to her. “Florence.” Florence smiled with assurance and stood up.

“Ok…um…you don’t understand what I’m saying, but I have to talk to you, so I’m going to say whatever is on my mind and you can say anything you want back.” Florence replied. Joni stared at her, still smiling. “You’re so
adorable. Gosh! Never in a million years have I pictured meeting anyone like you. Now only if you spoke English!” Florence muttered. Joni was still staring at her. “Gosh! You freak me out though. You keep staring at me.” Joni laughed as she blabbered on.

“Hai thur dai roo, wa chun huang thur lurh gern. Tee thur mai yom pood ja, thik praw krai thur mai bauk.” He sang. She smiled as she studied him. He stopped when he figured she wasn’t blabbering anymore. She was listening to him. He smiled as he continued. “Hai tur dai rong, ploy num tha thur tee mee. Auk ma hai mun ra bai, eek mai nan wun tee hord rye, ja hye pai gub num tha.” He laughed as she stared at him. She was shocked. He sang so well and his voice, his voice was so smooth. She felt uncomfortable and started
laughing with him. He stopped and stared at her. She suddenly stopped and looked at her sheet. She felt stupid so she glanced at her clock. Smiling at him she wrote down ‘9:22am.’

“Wow. Not only are you the most handsome man I’ve ever met, but you can sing too!” she exclaimed as she stood up. “Well I have to go. See you tomorrow Mr. Anwar.” He smiled as she walked for the door. “Swatdee ka.” She said as she walked out of the door. She closed the door shut and leaned against the
door. A nurse passed by, smiling at her.
“A cutie, huh?” the nurse asked. Florence smiled and nodded.
