It happened yesterday when she went grocery shopping and came upon a man in his late fifties. She was speaking with one of the cashier about an application when all of a sudden the older man came behind her and asked if she was looking for a job. He appeared to be a kind, wise man, so she agreed on an interview. So there she was, at the meeting place, ten minutes early. Janie sat at the backside of the restaurant, thinking he would want a quiet interview. But people in this restaurant seem to talk with a low tone anyway, so it didn't really matter, oh well, at least there's a nice view of the bushes she thought blandly. The door of the restaurant opened, and she turned her head to see if it was the interviewer, but much to her shocking nerves, that man was quite the opposite of the old, soft-featured man, instead, he was the tall, built, sexy man who stole her nerves! Oh god, she wanted to hide under the table! She turned her straining eyes elsewhere, anywhere, preferably away from him. "Sorry to keep you waiting Miss Janie Tienphosuwan" said the interviewer as he slid into the seat across from her. She had not seen him coming in. He must have walked in behind the man who stole her nerves. She really need to get a hold of herself. Why did the interviewer have to say her name so loud, the whole world could hear it, Janie thought, looking solemnly at the interviewer. "Oh, I haven't waited long," she mustered. "Are you alright? Your face seems a little pale. I know, you mustn't had anything to eat yet, lets order first then," he said, already skimming through the menu. She bet he was the one starving. Darren's fixed eyes on the redhead before him switched to the mass of black hair at the end of the room. He wouldn't have known she was here if it weren't for the man who spoke. What is she doing here and with that old man? he thought to himself. The redhead tugged at his tux sleeve demanding for attention. He smiled sweetly at her and ushered her to the table across the room from Janie. He had missed the sight of her, now that he had the opportunity to look all he want without her looking at her hand, he was happy with that much. Janie looked at the couple from across the room. She hadn't noticed he brought a date with him, just the sight of him made her forget everything. But seeing his hands on the redhead's back made her twitched with envy. She shouldn't feel jealous towards his date, after all, she was nothing to him, and he was nothing to her. Yes, she must keep that in mind before her heart gets broken. The waitress cleared the table leaving two cups of coffee. Janie took a sip of hers as she winced at the strong taste. She have never drank coffee before, never really intended to, but it seem polite to take a sip of it when her interviewer was licking the last drop off his coffee cup. She smiled faintly and folded her hands together. "Well, lets get on with the interview," he said, wiping his mouth with the cloth. "I met you at the grocery store and found that you were a very attractive lady, and was wondering if you would like to be my secretary, or more." He disgustingly licked his lips, and nudged her shoes with his. The gall of this man! This horny asshole, after he's full, he gets horny! She stood up with a force she never knew she possessed as the chair toppled over. "You disgusting pervert!" She screamed, grabbing her purse and dashing out. But not quick enough that the old man grabbed her hands. "I would give you anything you want, think about it," he offered, gripping her hands so tight she couldn't pull it out. Instead, she used her two-inch high heels to stomp on his foot, and then kneeled him in the groin with her knees. The old man winced and bawled down on his knees with both hands on his crutch. "You bitch!" he muttered. "You chose the wrong lady you old pervert, go get yourself a whore!" she screamed through gritted teeth, then running as fast as she could out of the restaurant. As she was outside finding her keys in her purse, a hard grip on her arm stopped her from further movement. This iron-hard clasp did not belong to the old man, for it was much too hard to yield. She spinned around, and lifted her knees to stomp all her might on his foot, to hurt him like she had previously hurt the older man. But he was too fast for her. With lightning speed, he held both of her wrist with one hand. "Whoa there, take it easy, it's just me," Darren cooed, putting his other arm around her waist to keep her from squirming. "The hell if I care," Janie spat, squirming all the more. At that moment, she didn't care, even if he was a king, all she wanted right now was to flee home and lock herself in her room. That god-awful old wimp was one of the many who had offered disgusting jobs. She wanted to melt in disdain. But right now, she needed to get a hold of herself, literally. She began kicking at his shins, but it didn't do much effect when they were knee to knee, she couldn't do what she did to the old man. Damn, how is she going to get out? Darren held her tighter in his arms until she felt like she couldn't breathe anymore, she went limp on his body. How he wanted to strangle the old man for touching her, but he was still wondering what he had said to have made her fly out of the restaurant like that. Hell, the old man deserved that kick in the balls, he must have suffered real pain. Darren chuckled at her brave behavior. He really did underestimate this drop-dead gorgeous woman he's holding, she was as soft and sweet as he thought she would be. He'll let her go when she have calmed down, let him ask some questions, for he knew that it was high time to give her the offer.. But right now, it feels good to simply hold her. "Let me go you damn pervert," Janie muffled under his shirt. She was getting sick of being pushed, now she had it. "Let me go." "Easy there on the vocab," he said, rubbing his hand up and down her back. "Just trying to calm you down." "I think you did more than trying to calm me down. I'm asking you nicely, let me go or else." "Or else what? You'd try your heels on me? I don't think that would work honey, just relax and I'll letgo of you." He really was enjoying this little play they're having. Heck, he didn't want it to end. Janie relaxed, and Darren pulled his arms away from her. The sudden chillness swept over her, she was so warm in his embrace. Cut it out, he's a pervert, she's not supposed to like being in a pervert's arms. "Go back to your date, I'm going home," with that said, Janie swung her head high, and stalked to her bent-up car. Darren trailed behind her, and encircled her arms with his hands, "Wait just a moment, there was a reason why I wanted you to cool down," he said, preparing himself to ask her the question that was bugging him the first time he saw her. "Can we talk?" "No." "You're looking for a job right?" he asked, performing his sensual once-over with his pitch black eyes. Janie shook her head. Oh no not again, she felt nauseated. She wanted to hurl right then and there, on his shoe if it'll make her feel better. Not him, why can't he be any different than other men. Why did she even think he would be any different from them perverts? She called him a pervert herself, so why did it hurt her so much to see that she was right? Darren saw the tears that was forming in her eyes, then a sprang of anger erupted. She was disgusted of him. That was not the result he wanted to see. Ladies flock to him, and when the knowledge that she didn't want him, was kick to his loins. He'll do anything to make her change her mind, if that was what it took. Darren grind his teeth together. He wanted to calm her down, but she might fight like a wildcat again. "The moment I saw you, I couldn't ask you to be my secretary, you didn't fit in the roll I needed, but I still wanted you-" he didn't get to finish his sentence as a slap shook his right cheek. This was the second time he got slapped in his life. His eyes shrunk to tiny slits, the eyes of an angry tiger. She finally saw the black side of his always-charming attitude, she took a step back, fearing he'd hurt her. Darren took a step forward, and with lightening speed kissed her unyielding lips. Janie held her lips tightly together. She will not submit to a forced kiss! She squirmed but only to feel his hands digging in her hair, holding her still. She tried to push him, but that was a wasted effort, his chest was as hard as rock. Using her last futile effort, she bit his lips, hard. That worked, he immediately let go of her and put his fingers to his lips that was now bleeding red substance down his dented chin. He looked at her surprisingly as she looked at him as if saying, you come any closer, you'd get more than a bleeding lip, and she met every word she said. He didn't know whether to shake her or kiss her. The kiss was a given, but he'd have to shake her first. She had nerves to challenge him, and damn if it turn him on. Janie glared at Darren with piercing eyes, then before he could make any move, she stumbled so quickly in her old weary car, he wouldn't be able to catch her this time, she made sure of it. Slamming her foot on the gas pedal, the old car drove out of the parking lot as smooth as silk; if silk has little bumps on them. Janie was still rocked by the kiss as she tried to concentrate on driving; her goal right now was to get to her house in one piece. Darren stared after Janie's car, he'll let her go just this last time, but next time though, she won't be able to resist him. He smiled at the kiss they shared, more like he forced on her, but the latter was the same. Darren felt someone behind him, and turned only to have a bouquet of flowers thrown at his face. He caught it with his hands and stared at the red head before him, with menacing eyes. All of the girls he dated were quite aware of the consequences of deliberately trying to control him. No, it doesn't work that way with Darren. The ladies knew better than to do that, and the only reason they would do that at the first place is to end the one day relationship thinking he'd plead for her to stay. One day was the maximum day he'd allow for anyone to be with him. But that one day would be the one day that would alter that particular girl's life, heck she'd see other guys differently, certainly they couldn't compare with Darren. The Darren who treated them likea princess, even if it was only for a day. Now this red head stared at him with such hurt in her eyes, but Darren knew it was all an act. She would throw the bouquet at his face, then cry, sob, and denounced that he cheated on her although she knew they were only going out for lunch, she would intent on slapping him but keep her hand raised in mid air, then let it fall to her side and tell him that his face was too gorgeous to be hurt, so she would turn slowly away from him and drop her business card in his hands, then leave with a last longing, hurt look on her face without saying goodbye. Darren knew, all of the girls he dated knew their script, and the act went accordingly. It was a pity though; the red head was a pretty little thing, but she didn't turn him on like his Janie. Darren looked down at his hands where the business card laid, he shoved it in his pockets so she wouldn't feel bad. Darren was confused himself, he never looked at any other girl while he dated them, but this was an exception, that curly black head- Janie, really got to him. Hell, he has never felt so strongly about a girl before. He have seen prettier girls before, but it's something about her that caught him. Janie Tienphosuwan has a beauty that stands out, she's different, she's attractive, and exotic, he have never seen anyone so captivating. Shit, he got to get in her pants. It was beyond her reach. Janie watched Joe as Joe stared horridly at his loving kitten getting flattened by one of the trashy cars in the neighborhood. The blood-shot eyes stuck his dirty head out the window, gave them the finger, honked the horn, and still managed to say, "Remember to keep your damn cat off the streets!" She wanted to scream that there were no more next time since the cat is a flat as leather, and that it was his own damn, drunken self who swerved halfway across their lawn, but she held her tongue. Besides, his ugly, macho car was much bigger and can do more damage to her than she can do to it. She sighed and began to sooth her sensitive brother. Heck, even people who weren't sensitive could get pent up in seeing their beloved kitten getting smashed with their own eyes. For a sensitive kid like Joe, it was more than he could take. He burrowed his face on her stomach, the highest his adorable head could reach, and sobbed uncontrollably. "It's ok Joe," she soothed, rubbing his small of a back. "There will be another kitten strolling to our lawn one coincident day, just like the first one did before." She felt so low when she could not tell him that she would buy him a kitten. The hell with coincident. But she just can't get that kind of cash, much less find a job. "It won't be the same," Joe muffled under her shirt. Then he began the ordeal of sobbing again. It tore her apart to see her adoring brother like this, he has such a strong character, even for a boy of seven. And damn if she can't do anything about it. As Janie was reassuring Joe, a loud Clunk! came from her shack. That was the sound of a chair falling over, a chair falling over, Janie repeated, automatically jerking up and running into her grandma's room, thumping of shoes followed her. Both hands were perched on the doorframe as she stared blindly, unbelievably at the body sprawled on the rug, her grandma's thin body was lying lifelessly on the ground. She turned around and pulled her brother away from the scene as she ran for the telephone. She grabbed the cordless phone and dialed 911. She was on edge, her hands were shaking as she concentrated to keep the phone attached to her earlobe as she called the ambulance. A breathless voice broke out of her throat, it sounded so distance, so not her voice. She went through the ordeal, with raw nerves, and felt like she was going to burst into tears. Joe was standing quietly beside her, still confused about what happened. She had to be in control, she can't break down, not now. Forty-five minutes later, the surgeon told her that her grandma was stabilized, and that she would be ready to go home tomorrow. It was always like this with her grandma. She would shock them- as if she wouldn't come back. But this time, she really did scare Janie. Janie was always terrified of being alone in the world with only her brother. After both of her parents lives were taken by a drunk driver, she was left with her grandma and brother. Although her grandma could only limp, and visits the hospital quite often, she was glad her grandma could remain alive till this day. Her grandma was eighty-five years old, and thus the wisest women Janie knew, and grew to highly respect. She wouldn't know what to do without her grandma. But her grandma sure put a strain on those medical bills. Often visiting the hospital like her grandma did, all of the money she had left from her parents, which wasn't very much, were spent on the medical bills that turned into debts. Janie had to work two jobs and drop out of school to support her family, although the money was meager, they were fed and survived. Janie and the rest of her family were forced to move into the tenements, the slums. She was so relieved that the government helped pay at least seventy percent of the medical bill, considering they were lowly income; you could even say they were poor. "Oh what am I supposed to do now?" Janie rubbed her face. "I can't even find a job." Joe rested his head on her right shoulder and said, "I could go look for a job." His suggestion made Janie feel all the more stressed out and guilty. She was the older one, her duty was to support him, but here her seven-year old brother is offering to work. Ugh..Janie mumbled, can a person feel anymore rotten? Janie turned to her brother and put her arms around him, reassuringly. "Listen Joe, we're ok. I just found a job, and now I will be able to support us, and you'd never go hungry again," she gave a swift nod of her head to confirm her promise, now she just need to find a job....and keep the promise. She wanted to cry. Joe smiled at the comforting thought that he won't be hungry anymore. He shut his eyes and the old memories of being with their parents and eating a slice of cheese pizza warmed his narrow body. He had forgotten what pizza tasted like. Darren leaned against the sofa with his foot propped up on the coffee table. The soft breeze of the night kissed the sensitive part of his neck, caressing him with its nature's touch, just like the black curls that seduced him with her soft curves, gentle clear eyes, and the way she held herself back, afraid to look at him for fear of falling head over heels in love with him- just like the other girls. It was a piece of cake for Darren to get any girls, why might it be difficult to get one this one? Just wait and see. He smiled as he thought of a plan to accomplish this. Yet a haste knock interrupted his concentration. Without his consent, the door opened ajar, and a large shape of a man appeared before the doorway. The man took his sunglass off, took a step forward and gave a quick show of respect with a nod of his head, and said, "Mr. Knell, we know where they'rehiding." The man looked at Darren with as much dignity and courage as possible. As much as he tried to be brave, the pierce stare of the relaxed man before him was deadly. He knew this-speaking from experience. He wasn't the person receiving hell, but he was there. He witnessed enough to make his blood run cold and afraid of Darren from then on. One thing he have learned from working for Darren was that one, don't get on his bad side, two, when you have information he want, make sure you tell him the whole truth, he won't take that kindly, no sirree. The last lesson was; do not betray him, or don't let him find out, but it's a given that he would find out, so do yourself a favor, just don't. Darren may look relaxed and laid back as he appears right now, but boy don't let that fool you. He's a tiger waiting for the moment to strike, waiting for the prey to make a stupid move. Darren crossed his arms across his chest, that was a sign for the other man to take the seat across from him. Darren liked to be able to look people straight in the eyes to make sure they're not lying to him, or just for the pleasure of scaring the wits out of these scary cats. When he heard the soft poundings from the door, he had his fingers on the bolt, waiting to bring his hands out and aim at the predator. But apparently, it was only the investigator, Charles, the person he had hired to trace the spies, the betrayals. The two betrayers had hired some people to cause more destruction to his company. The people they hired were to have already applied for his company. That's why he checked the applicants himself, which he usually allow his vice-president to do. But he had to make sure himself, so far, there were no suspiciously looking applicants. Charles cleared his throat and said, "There are three spies, but my crew and I have only spotted two of them so far. They were drinking around the tenements. They have a woman working for them, but I'm not sure who she is as yet, because she haven't surfaced. But I'll track her down. Men who hire a woman to work for them are as easy as hell to get rid of. Besides, they're just a bunch of alcoholics," he chuckled. "The traders hired the wrong gang." Darren's lips quirked up, "I want you to find out what they're up to, and when they're going to make their move. Understood?" ..........TO BE CONTINUED .... |
