Chapter 2

Carmen sat there in silence as he kept his dark eyes on her, he flashed a smile across his face as Carmen
swore that she saw a dimple appeared on his cheek. Carmen stood up from her chair as he stood in front of
her, I’m guessing that you’re the real fiance, Carmen thought as she smiled back. Without a word, he wrapped
his arms around her, Carmen’s eyes widen by his quick surprise.

"You are nothing the way you described yourself in your letters Kelly." He said as his eyes brighten.

"What do you mean?" Carmen questioned, afraid that he might have known the difference.

"For one thing, you’re beautiful." He answered her, "Gorgeous, lovely, and very different from how you
described yourself in your letters." He gave a quick laugh as he sat her down and walked over to his side of the table. "You’re quite shy for one thing." Carmen laughed at his remark and blushed as he poured himself some brandy and offered it to her.

Gumpan was amazed at how his future wife looked, everything about her was what Gumpan expected to be,
even more.

"I’ve been waiting for this day to come for me to meet you." Gumpan said as he took a sip of his drink, his
smile was so warm that Carmen wanted more to stay than go back home to where his father was to wed her
off.

"I have too." Carmen said as she tries to make everything sound smooth and calm, but she could hear her own
voice shake with every word that she’d spoken. Carmen reached for her spoon as Gumpan spoke to her.

"Do you like these flowers?" Gumpan questioned Carmen after he realized her eyes searching the room. "I
have the maids pick them this morning… for you."

"Yes." Carmen nodded, "Yellow are very nice too." Gumpan raised his eyebrows at her comment and Carmen
could see that she had said something wrong or something.

"You said you liked yellow flowers in all of the letters you wrote to me." Gumpan said as he leaned back into his
chair and reached for his own spoon.

After finishing their breakfast in silence, Gumpan looked up from his plate and said, "If you don’t mind, today I
have a lot of business to do." He placed his fork next to his plate as he continued, "I will see you at mid day and
perhaps we can spend some real times together, instead of writing each other’s letters." Gumpan saw Carmen
gave a smile as the servants entered through the door for their food.

"Yes, that would be fine with me." Carmen answered him as she got up and placed her hands over his and he
led her out of the room.

Carmen sat at the study room, her hand placed upon the soft arm of the chair as she glanced at each picture
on the wall. Gumpan must be the one on the left, Carmen thought as she stare at the painting. He must be
around the age of seventeen to twenty in that picture. His eyes looked warm, but soon looked cold if you stare
at it long enough. There was no smile on his face, but Carmen could surely see a smile at the tip of his lips.
Carmen smiled to herself and thought about Gumpan’s real fiancee, why Gumpan liked her so much. Soon her
thought went to her father, wondering if her father would still be thinking about her and searching for her. This
Kelly Sawangjaeng must have arrived the day Carmen ran away and must be on the same ship that Carmen
walked out of.

"Miss…" Taya’s voice came from behind Carmen. "Would you like some tea?" Taya carried in her hand a tray
that was filled with a cup and some warm tea on it. Carmen nodded and Taya poured some into the cup and
handed to Carmen.

"Tell me Taya…" Carmen said after she took a sip of her tea, "What is Gumpan like?" Carmen asked as Taya
looked up.

"Have the letters you two wrote back and fourth for two years now not help you at all about him?" Taya replied
as Carmen gave a laughed and slowly nodded.

"Yes, but maybe if you could tell me a little more." Carmen placed her tea down, "Since you live here and see
him everyday, you must know his personality and everything." Carmen sat up in her chair as Taya nodded and
agree to describe a little bit of Gumpan to Carmen.

"He’s quite the average guy that you think he is. There’s nothing special about him." Taya giggled as Carmen
took another sip of her tea. "He loves to talk about you." Taya exclaimed, "Everyday is Kelly this and Kelly that,
you’ll think that we’ll get tire of hearing about you, but it’s quite interesting. Unlike his cousin, Joni, Gumpan is
more of a serious guy, but he does know when to have fun." Taya paused for a second and than continued,
"But I’m guessing that he already told you all of this in his letters that he’d written to you." Carmen smiled at her
as Taya got up and walked out the door.

Seconds later, Gumpan entered through the door. Carmen looked up at him in shock as he walked over to her;
quickly he gave Carmen a soft kiss on the forehead as his hands rested on the side of her arms.

"I’m guessing you had fun sitting here alone?" Gumpan gave a soft laugh as Carmen smiled at him.

"Very." Carmen answered sarcastically. "Are you done with your business?" She asked as Gumpan sat down
across from her.

"Yes." Gumpan answered, "I thought that we could spent this time getting to know each other more and than
plan our wedding day."

"Plan our wedding day?" Carmen asked, "We have plenty of time, why could we just spend today talking."
Carmen knew that she got to do something to delay the wedding until she knows that everything is going to go
all right.

"Alright," Gumpan said as he looked out the window, "we can do that later."

"Okay." Carmen leaned back as Gumpan spoke up.

"You’re gorgeous." Carmen blushed at his comment and her heart felt light at the sound of his bottomless tone.

"You’ve already said that." Carmen slowly said as she realized that he was coming toward her.

"You are." Gumpan lower his voice as the room seemed fuzzy at his sudden move. Carmen listened to what he
had to say, but he paused and placed his hand against her cheek.

Gumpan was different from the other guys that Carmen knew, he did not have to use his sweet words to take
her away or his soft touch. Sure he was handsome, handsome in a different way from other men too. All it took
from Gumpan was his sweet smile and his warm mysterious dark brown eyes, it had seem that they had taken
control over her. The tone of his voice, the smile that linger upon his lips and the gleam that stays in his eyes.
Carmen was falling for someone who she hardly knew.
