Chapter 6

Their first breakfast together was silence and dead ; none of them said anything after the first bit. King
Henry didn’t want to mention anything that would end up with him saying sorry for sending her away. As for
Kelly, she wanted to tell her father the real reason why she was here for, but she wasn’t sure when it was
the time to let him know. “Kelly.” King Henry said after they finished their breakfast, “I want to know, are you doing anything today and for the next couple of days?” He asked as Kelly looked up at him.
“Um…” Kelly wasn’t sure how to answer him, she wanted to go and look for her fianc?, but she also wanted to
spent the time that she had lost with her father too. “No.” Kelly said, trying to sound real. “Good, because I want to spend sometime with you and get to know you a little bit more.” He said with his voice fill with excitement as the servant walked in to take the food away. Kelly moved her eyes to the Chinas in the cabinet as servants walked in and out with the dishes; she remembered what her aunt had said to her when she came here.

“Your father will approve of your engagement and if he doesn’t just write to me, I’ll come right over. Everything will be fine, do not worry. If he (Gumpan) is willing to asked you to marry him over just writing to each other than he can’t turn his back when you arrive there. He must already have loved you enough that he knows he wants to spent the rest of his life with you.”

Kelly smiled again as she and her father walked out of the room. She could tell how much her father wanted
to spent time with her and she did too, but she had other business to do. Maybe I could spent a couple of
days with my father and than go and look for Gumpan and tell father about my engagement. Kelly thought as
they entered the drawing room.

Carmen starred down at the rose garden as Joni and his cousin Gumpan sat down and talk, she sighed as she
wanted to learn more about Gumpan; who he is, what kind of a person he is, what he likes or dislike, and
many more that lingers around her mind. Not only does she want to know him, she don’t want to look like a
fool when she say or does something wrong that might give her away, it was because she was in love with him and Carmen knew absolutely nothing about him. She didn’t know his last name, his favorite colors, what
kind of hobbies does he like and so on. Carmen didn’t want to ask Taya too much or she might think that
something is wrong, she needed something that will tell her about him without asking the people around
here.

The letters. Carmen remembered that it was the letter that they wrote back and fourth to each other, telling
about them selves. Maybe Kelly might have written something in her letters to Gumpan describing about
her, but where would he put the letters. Carmen didn’t want to go looking through his room for what something
that doesn’t belong to her, but it was Kelly’s letter that she wrote to him and since Carmen is now Kelly,
it wouldn’t really matter. Carmen sat at the chair next to the window as she kept her eyes on him; studying the handsome figure with his mysterious look and charming smile that makes Carmen lose everything.

“Taya…” Carmen said as she clasped her hands together, “Do you know where Gumpan puts his letters that… I
wrote to him?” She asked, almost saying Kelly instead of I. Taya looked up from what she was doing and
raised her eyebrows. “Why?” Taya asked curiosity, “Do you want to read them over or something?” Carmen smiled as she sat herself up straight from the armchair that she was sitting. “Perhaps.” Carmen answered, “I just want to see if he keeps them like I do.”
“I too don’t know.” Taya gave a quick answer as she continued her work; “Perhaps you should ask Gumpan.”
She gave a suggestion as Carmen gave a smile to seal away the lie that she was making.

“King Henry is planning to wed his daughter to King George.” Joni said as Gumpan sat across from him, “Did
you not hear that?” Joni asked as Gumpan slowly shook his head. Joni knew Gumpan had no attention of playing any attention to him, he was off somewhere thinking about his young lovely fianc?e. “Are you listening?”
Joni asked again Gumpan than nodded and said. “Yes, his daughter. Would she want to marry any man as
old as King George.” Gumpan finished as he lifted his gaze to Carmen’s window.

“I suppose not, but she had no choice.” Joni said as he followed Gumpan’s gaze to the window that Carmen
was staring down at just a couple minutes ago. “Poor girl, no one had ever seen her and she’s already being
wed off to some King.” “Speaking of King Henry, I was ask to join him and a couple of his friend for a meeting.” Gumpan said as he moved his gaze away from the window and back to Joni.
“And when would that be?” Joni asked.
“After the ball.” Gumpan gave a short answer as he reached for his drink. Gumpan wasn’t sure what the
meeting with the king was about but all he knew that if it was with a king than it must be something important, perhaps to set a date for the wedding.
“So when is your wedding date with Kelly?” Joni asked, as he is always the noisy one and the one who knows
most of the news that’s happening around.
“We haven’t talk about it, but Aunt Ning said that she want the wedding to be in June, so I’m guessing that
it’ll be somewhere in June.” Gumpan answered Joni.

“Really?” Joni replied him as Gumpan took a sip of his drink. Gumpan stared at Joni as if June was a bad
month for weddings, but he kept silence and did not ask anything further more. Joni had notice that ever
since Kelly had arrived, Gumpan had been a little more cheerful and not himself lately. But of course it was
good too, because the people here hardly see him smile even though he is always happy. Only that sometimes it looks like Kelly had no real feelings for Gumpan, Joni had noticed that, but he didn’t say anything. Joni only figure it out that she just needs time to get to know him and see the real Gumpan inside, instead of
learning about him through letters. Joni sighed as the servants walked up to them and asked if Gumpan was
ready for their little shopping to town this afternoon with Kelly. Gumpan nodded and got up, leaving Joni
sitting there as he enjoined the bright sun and the beautiful blue sky.

“Kelly?” Gumpan said as he entered her bedchamber and saw Taya standing next to her. Carmen looked up and saw his reflection in her mirror and a smile fell across her face, she stood up and walked up to Gumpan.
“Good day Taya.” Gumpan greeted her as Taya walked out of the room and left them alone. “Kelly…” He repeated himself as she looked up at him with those almond eyes of hers. “I want to take you to town this afternoon and buy you a couple of dresses for the ball that my Aunt is having.” Carmen smiled as Gumpan continued,
“Could you go?”
“Yes, I would love to go.” She said, but stopped as she thought that her father’s men might still be out
there searching for her and might seen her in the street. “But I…” She said as she thought of something
to excuse her from going. “I’m not use to everything yet, so if you don’t mind, could you go without me and
buy whatever you think is nice.”
“Are you sure?” Gumpan said as he stroked her hair, “I might choose something that you might not like.”
“I’m sure you now how to pick a gown and the one you first gave me was lovely, not like my other gowns I
wear at home.” Carmen said as Gumpan thought about her decision that she has just made. Carmen thought that Gumpan might knew now, but he flashed her a smile and nodded.

“Alright then…” Gumpan stated, “What if I just tell some of the maids to go and get you something so that
I can spent some time with you.” Carmen thought about it for a second and than nodded at his decision.
“Okay, that would be great, I do need time to get to know you too.” Carmen replied as Gumpan ran his hands
down her arms and stared at her eyes and he knew that it was her who he only loved and that he had made the
right choice to asked her to marry him. “I’ll go and tell the servants about our decisions, they will go and get you a couple of gowns.” Gumpan gave her quick kiss on the cheek as Carmen thought about how she was lying to him and everyone else here in this mansion. She didn’t know how this lie was going to go or how it was going to end up, but she loved everything here. She wasn’t stuck inside the stone walls of this house, she even was offered to go out to town. At times Carmen would forget that she was living a lie, pretending that she was someone else and taking someone else lover.

She sat down at the edge of the bed as Gumpan closed the door behind him and walked away, Carmen remembered about the letter she was writing the other day and was going to run away and let the note tell them
everything. She remembered that she put it right there on the nightstand next to her bed, the letter wasn’t
there anymore. Carmen searched the room and saw the letter no where and thought that she might have thrown
it away sometimes these couple of days.

A couple of second after Gumpan walked out of her room Taya walked back in with a basket full of dry flowers.
She had only gone for a couple of second and already she was full of dust and ashes, Carmen’s gaze followed
her as she walked over to her vase full of yellow flowers that was already dried from yesterday.

“May I ask…” Carmen started as Taya grabbed a hand full of the flowers and put it in her basket and
reached for another hand full. “Are you taking those flowers away and getting new ones?” Taya nodded and turned to face Carmen as she placed the flowers in her basket, she leaned on the table as Carmen straightened the bed sheet. “I’m going to pick new ones.” Taya answered her as Carmen asked if she could help. “Sure.” Taya replied as she headed out of the door and Carmen followed behind her with her velvet gown dragging behind her.
The hall smelled lovely as usual, the atmosphere was fill with flowers even though Taya had already taken
them and placed them in her basket. Sometimes Carmen still thinks that she’s back at home, walking down
their long cold stone walls with their old servants working nonstop. But she was trying not to remember
all those things, from her father to their castle and even from being a princess. She had loved all those
things, but they weren’t what she wanted. Not a father that didn’t care about his daughter’s future of being
trap inside the walls of the huge castle and only being call “My Lady” or “Princess,” instead of by her
real name. The name that her mother had given to her. Carmen took a deep breath as she tries to think only
about her future, now that she thinks everything will go perfectly. She had love everything here, everyone
here had treated her normally like everyone else. But she was forgetting that it was not her that they were
treating, it was Kelly Sawangjaeng that they were treating normally and planning the wedding with. But
Carmen had not thought anything about that yet.
