Chapter 10
Gumpan sat in his room, looking out the window into the rose garden;
he crossed his leg at the ankle and
clasped his hand together as he placed his chin on it. His fiancée
was quite different from how she described
herself, but Gumpan had nothing against it. She was an angel to Gumpan,
her smile was beautiful and Gumpan
realized that her smiled stayed with her until the sun fell and the
moon awaken. She seemed to think about
her words carefully before she spoke, but Gumpan knew that a lady who
spoke with words like her was more
than he wanted. At times she was quite shy and seems to be out of words,
but quite talkative and seem to do
the opposite from her letters. Gumpan thought about taking her to his
Aunt Ning's ball and having her
introduce to everybody there and hearing them say how lovely and beautiful
she is. How she would bow at each guest and smile as they made a comment
about her.
"Have you gotten Kelly her an engagement ring yet?"
Ning had asked him earlier today when he met up with them in the study
room where they have been talking.
Gumpan realized that the ring had already been bought and he had just
forgot to put it on her fingers, but
Gumpan know the perfect time to pick it on and make the perfect proposal.
He was going to take Kelly out
walking this evening at the countryside where she love and that is where
he would ask her again and make
everything like she had dream about in her letters. He got up as he
made his way to the drawer where he
keeps his letters Kelly had written to him and of course the engagement
ring, he held the little box in
his hand. He took a breath as he walked out of the room, and made his
way down to where she was suppose
to be with Taya.
"How do you suppose Gumpan
would asked you out if he saw you on the street instead of writing
to you?" Taya asked childish as Carmen turned to flash a smile
across her face. Carmen had gotten use to Taya as her
own sister that she'd share almost everything with her, almost everything.
Taya was her age, only a couple years younger and was a pretty girl
who doesn't fit to be a young maid at all.
"I do not know, but maybe he would walk up to me and say, Excuse
me pretty miss, may I ask for your name?"
Carmen lower her voice as a young man as Taya giggled from what Carmen
had just said. "And than he would..." her voice faded away
as Gumpan cleared his throat and walked toward them with the smile
that usually makes Carmen melt.
"Excuse me ladies..." Gumpan said as he lower his voice,
"Do you mind if I join you for some conversation?" he raised
his brows at Carmen as Taya poured some water into the vase full of
flowers.
"Go ahead." Carmen answered him as Taya kept on her smile.
Gumpan walked up to Carmen and stood in front of her, the sun was
about to set but he knew that they still had time to make it to the
countryside and share
some moments together.
"Do you mind if I take you somewhere?" Gumpan asked as Carmen
nodded and stood up.
"Where too, may I ask?" She asked.
"To the countryside." Gumpan answered her as she looked
at Taya and bit her lower lip.
"Could we go to the beach, I haven't there and I would love it
if you take me?" Carmen said, forgetting that
maybe the real Kelly might have been to the beach once or twice before
in her life.
"To the beach..." Gumpan repeated as he thought that Kelly
had always loved the countryside, but maybe the
beach was another side of Kelly's dream to see. "Sure why not."
Gumpan answered as he took Carmen by the
hand and led her out as they said bye to Taya and made their way out
to the carriage.
"Are you sure you want to go to the beach instead?" Gumpan
wanted to make sure and when Carmen answered with a yes, Gumpan called
out to the coachman and it was to the beach that they would go.
The road got rockier as they
got nearer to the beach and the sound of the wave crash upon the sand
and
rocks as the carriage made a turn and the beach came to view. Gumpan
turned to face Carmen and saw the joy on her face and could see the
child in her as her eyes brighten up. He had never thought that she
would be so excited just to see the ocean. Gumpan leaned closer to
Carmen as he whispered into her ears.
"Here we are, the beach." Carmen smiled without turning
to face him and keeping her gaze on the bubble
top wave as they rocked back and fourth upon the sand. Gumpan too
was searching the area with his own eyes as if he had never been to
the ocean before himself, but he had been here close to a million
times before. He too had loved the ocean since he was a young boy.
He would ask Ning or Voy or anyone who is available at that time or
moment to take him to the beach and to feel the warm sun against his
face and the soft tickle
of the sandy beach beneath his feet. Although they hardly taken him,
he would sneak out at times and come
back when he think that they would be looking for him back at home.
The beach too was his mother's favorite
place, though he doesn't know much about his mother, Ning had descried
a lot about his mother and father to
him.
The sun was just over the horizon when they reached there and got
off of the carriage. Gumpan searched the
area for a place for them to be seated, as they would watch the sun
set over the horizon.
"This is lovely Gumpan, I've never seen anything this beautiful
before." Carmen exclaimed as she took a step
toward the sand. Gumpan smiled as Carmen turned around with a huge
smile in her face; she looked as if she
was a child again, seeing something amazing. Gumpan walked over to
her as he gently took hold by her hand
and walked her over to where the water meets the shore.
Throughout the walk on the beach Gumpan could see the glitter in her
eyes and the smile that stayed on her
face that brightens everything. Carmen had forgotten about everything
as they walked hand in hand down the
beach and felt the warm evening breeze across their face and their
hair. The sun had already settle down
into its sleep as the sky was starting to fill up with millions of
stars and the full moon just over head as they stop next to a rock
that Gumpan remember was a place where his mother love to come.
"Do you like it here in England?" Gumpan asked as he leaned
on the rock.
"Uh..." Carmen thought as she remembered again, Gumpan moved
his hair from his eyes as he waited for Carmen to answer her. "England,
it's nice." It was all she could think of. After spending all
her life her, she
couldn't even think of a better word to describe England. But what
was there to say about England, Carmen had wanted out of here and
leave this place behind and start a new life somewhere else. Maybe
even in America where her sister live, but what was Carmen still doing
here in England pretending to be someone else. Maybe it was to forget
about everything back at home or maybe because she wasn't thinking
right. "A lot nicer than from where I'm from, the city I mean."
Carmen finished with an innocent smile. "You have a lovely smile,
Kelly." Gumpan said as he raised his hand to the side of her
cheek and ran it down to the tip of her chin, holding it with his
thumb and forefinger. Carmen moved her gaze from his at the mention
of the name Kelly. Carmen had no idea how Kelly looked like if her
smile was more beautiful than hers, but Carmen loved it when Gumpan
made comment as nice as this even if its not for her. At least he
really means it and it was Carmen who he is seeing and describing.
Gumpan turned her face back to face him as he stared into her eyes
and saw the reflection of
himself and the million of stars. Before Carmen noticed anything,
his lips were on hers. Carmen didn't
know how to react; she made a sudden movement as she pulled her lips
from his. "I'm sorry, did I..." Gumpan
said as Carmen shook her head.
"It's nothing, I'm just... I guess shock." Carmen said as
she saw Gumpan smiled and leaned his head back
against the rock before lifting it up and saying,
"I'm guessing that it might be a little too fast for you than,
I thought you Americans are different?"
Gumpan smiled.
Carmen didn't say anything but turned her gaze to the shimmering ocean
and shivered from the night air as a
small breeze made its way through them. "Maybe we should start
heading back home." Gumpan slowly said as he leaned toward her.
Carmen felt a chill go down her spine as Gumpan took hold of her hand
and leaded her to the carriage that was going to take them back to
his mansion. Somehow Carmen couldn't stop thinking that something
odd was going to happen between them tonight, maybe not something
big but only a little. As they made they made their way to the carriage
Carmen walked slowly beside Gumpan as she keeps flashing a smile that
tells him that she wasn't sure what she was doing, but Gumpan only
thought that she was nervous about being here -alone- with him. As
their carriage started to pull away and into the rocky road again,
Carmen leaned back as she relaxed herself from the walk along the
shore. She could felt the heat inside the carriage as Gumpan sat next
to her and had his shoulder against hers.
Gumpan could see the night stars reflecting in her eyes as she turned
to look at him and gave him a smile, she was beautiful to Gumpan.
Her words, her look, the way she smile and they way she looked away
when she was shy or had nothing to say. Gumpan wanted to give her
everything, everything that would keep her happy and just to be with
her.
"Kelly..." Gumpan said as Carmen looked up again and waited
for what Gumpan had to say. "I have something
for you, but..." he stopped as Carmen felt his hand taking hold
of her hand, and she could felt the warmth of his breath. "I
can't give it to you right now, it's something you and I have talked
about often on our letters." He gave her a hint, but Carmen looked
blink and just smiled at him. Gumpan's smile slowly faded as he thought
that she had no idea what he was talking about, but he didn't give
much attention to that. As long as they both know what they wanted,
Gumpan was happy with that. Slowly without any telling why, Gumpan
lower his head toward hers and soon she could felt the soft touch
of his lips and the warmth of his flesh. Slowly she placed her hands
on his chest and gently pulls herself away from him and leaned back
on the other side as Gumpan stare at her with the eyes that Carmen
loved.
"What is it that you wanted to give me?" Carmen asked as
she tries to make him forget about what just happened. She could hear
him breathing as if he had just ran a race around England.
"I'll show it to you on that day." Gumpan slowly answered
her as he ran a hand through his hair and watched Carmen from where
he was sitting.
"And when will that be?" Carmen asked cheerfully as if nothing
had happened.
"At the ball." Gumpan replied her with a raise of his brows.
